Special (Non-Degree Seeking) Students

The application will open for Spring 2009 on October 1, 2008.

Special students are non-degree seeking students, though they are still governed by the same academic rules (e.g. application deadline, fees, drop/add, withdrawals, grading, and retention policies) governing regular students. Students seeking reclassification from the special student status to regular degree seeking student status must submit an application via standard admission procedures. Please contact the Special Student Section of the Office of Admissions at (850) 644-3420 or email: admissions@admin.fsu.edu if you have questions or need additional information.

You should not apply as a special student if:

  • You are enrolled at another institution as a degree-seeking student.
  • You are planning to complete course work leading to a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree.

You should apply as a special student if:

  • You wish to complete course work that will not apply to a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree.
  • You are a post-baccalaureate student, not on academic dismissal from this or any other institution, and meet the University's rules and requirements.

All registration by special students is on a space-available basis. Because of excessive demand for some graduate courses, special students may be enrolled in such courses only with the permission of the graduate office of that particular unit and with the Office of Admissions.

Foreign nationals on a student visa may not use the special student status other than to fulfill prerequisite requirements, or for summer enrollment if full-time status has been maintained during the academic year. All other foreign nationals, whether intending degree or non-degree work, must obtain permission from the Office of Admissions.
