I sat on a little wall outside of Landis Hall on Monday so I could enjoy the sun and watch as transfer students walked to their advising sessions and such. It was a great day, the weather was awesome, I wasn't stressed at all about the huge exam I had the next day. The sun was shining brightly and there was a nice cool breeze...or at least is seemed like a nice cool breeze, until I saw IT. No, not the creepy clown from the movie, but a giant cloud of yellow. I couldn't believe it. The pollen levels were ridiculous.
Later, when I got in my car to go get food, I saw the real damage of the season. My car was completely yellow as well. It was horrible--I JUST got my car washed :(
There are some possitive aspects to this time of year though. For one, the flowers are in bloom. FSU has so many flowers around campus, it's amazing. In front of Kellum hall, where I live, there is new landscaping with little flower bushes all along the walkway. The integration statue near the Union also got new flowers and small plants that add to the beauty of the monument. It makes me proud to walk across the campus and admire the beautiful landscape around me. I'm glad there are professionals that look after our campus too...had it been my mom, the flowers would be dead for sure haha
You read correctly, I'm on spring break and still in Tallahassee. Instead of heading out to the beaches or reuniting with my family, I opted to stay with a brother in my fraternity and work in the Office of New Student and Family Programs for a couple of days.
In the office, I answer phones and help family members and students get ready for Orientation. I may have spoken to some of you! I also do tasks as needed in the office that gets materials ready for orientation or helps the training of the Orientation Leaders (who are SUPER AWESOME people...promise!).
But if you think that I'm sad that I'm not actually "breaking" for spring break, you have another thing coming. I love this office. I love helping people feel ready to become a 'Nole. Plus I probably would have been pretty bored had I gone home, I see people's facebook statuses...I know what's up...
This week is going to be really hectic. I just typed a really long post about how crazy it will be by doing a play by play of each day this week...and then I accidentally closed the window. :-$ (that's the angriest face I could muster on the keyboard)
Of course, my clumsiness shouldn't affect you out in the digital world so I'll do my best to give you a decent idea of what's going on haha.
I have two exams this week. One is TOMORROW on World Theatre History II, and the other is in Race and Ethnicity. Both of these exams are going to be a challenge, especially since I'm not sure when the study aspect is going to hit full force. I've studied along the way but i still feel majorly under-prepared. C'est la vie... I don't speak French hahaha
When can I study, you ask? Well, I have tons of free time...NOT! Tonight I have an interview for SouthGate (a private residence hall) and then I can study for my Tuesday exam. After Tuesday's exam I have class all day and then an All-Hall Social in Kellum Hall (Ironically, it's about de-stressing). Wednesday is Market Wednesday which obsorbs much of the morning, and then I work during the day, followed by a two hour staff meeting, an ice cream social, and then a floor social (with another RA on Sex...sure to be a fun and informative event). Thursday is my Race/Ethnicity exam, which is going to tbe NUTS. But when it's over, I'm FREE for the rest of the evening. Oh wait...jk, i have class all day hahaha. But the evening part is actually empty. So I can sleep or relax, or go to a fun event on campus. There are a couple of Pageants that night so I might stop in to one of those. Friday is mostly community service, which I love, so it will be a nice cap to this crazy week. And then that Saturday starts my fraternity's Spring Week.
No no, it's true, I did it. This weekend was jam-packed with so many awesome activities that I can hardly believe it all happened over the span of 72 hours. For simplicity, I'm going to break this crazy weekend down day by day. BRACE YOURSELF!
FRIDAY
After an exhausting evening of rehearsal for a scene that is being produced for a Directing II class, I slept in for what seemed like forever. Well, okay...that's sort of a lie. I actually woke up at 8:00...and then 8:15...and then 8:30...pretty much consistantly until I finally rolled out of bed at about noon (terrible, I know). When I finally got up though, I cleaned my room a little (KELLUM!!!) and got dressed for the day ahead. I'm taking Race/Minority Relations in the US (SYD4700...Awesome) and it has a Service Learning requirement, which means that I have a structured community service outreach that I have to do for a grade. I chose to do my community service at The Character Center, which is an afterschool program for K-8 children in the southside of Tallahassee. So from 1:45 until 6:15 on Fridays, I help little kids and hopefully inspire them to grow up and do great things. We discussed MLK and his dream and then had them share THEIR dreams...it was cute. Soon thereafter, I was heading back to campus when I received a text reminding me that I had a dinner with my Fraternity at 7:00. One of my brothers lost a family member on Christmas Day, so we had a dinner at the on campus Chili's with him to show our support. It was a really nice bonding moment for the chapter. It was also a really convenient location because right after we ate, we walked outside (into the Union) and I was already at my next even -- SLEEP OUT FOR THE HOMELESS. Members of Phi Beta Sigma were collecting canned goods, clothing, and bedding for the homeless community of Tallahassee. And to raise awareness of the cause, students were invited to spend the entire night outside in the cold. There was a DJ, fun old school games, and food that would be brought out by other organizations. It was TONS of fun and the donations were bountiful.
