Required Application Materials

Application Fee

A thirty dollar ($30) application fee in US currency must accompany the application. The application fee may be paid online after the application is submitted. If payment is sent by mail, the check or money order must be drawn on a US bank and be made payable to Florida State University. Foreign money orders are not accepted. The applicant's complete name and date of birth should be clearly indicated on all methods of payment. The application will not be processed without the application fee and under no circumstances will the University waive or postpone this fee.

Academic Records

Official or certified copies of all academic records and/or examination results from every institution attended are required. Records are considered official only when sent directly from the issuing institution, and must bear the original seal of the institution or the original signature of the institution's records official. All documents must be issued in the native language and be accompanied by certified English translations.

Test Requirements

Applicants are required to submit the following examination results prior to admission consideration. Results are considered official only when sent to the Office of Admissions directly from the testing agency.

TOEFL

Official TOEFL results are required of all international applicants whose native language is not English and who have not studied in an English-speaking country for at least one academic year. A minimum score of 550 on the paper-based test, 213 on the computer-based test, or 80 on the internet-based test is required for admission to the University, although some departments require higher scores at the graduate level. In addition, international graduate applicants seeking teaching assistantships are required to pass a test of spoken English. The TOEFL institutional code for Florida State University is 5219. ACT or SAT

Official ACT or SAT results are required of all incoming freshman applicants and all freshman and sophomore transfer applicants. It is recommended that junior and senior transfer applicants also submit these test scores. While the writing component of the ACT and/or SAT is required of all first-time-in-college students, FSU will not currently use it as part of the total composite/score. Florida College-Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST)

The Florida CLAST is an achievement test of the communication and computation skills expected of all students by the time they complete their sophomore year of college. All students are required by Florida statutes and rules of the State Board of Education to satisfactorily complete the Florida CLAST, or an appropriate alternative to the CLAST, before the granting of admission to upper-division status. Approved alternatives to the CLAST are:

  • A minimum critical reading score of 500 on the SAT, or 21 on the ACT English and 22 on the ACT reading, and a minimum math score of 500 on the SAT or 21 on the ACT; or
  • A minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA in 6 semesters hours of approved college-level English and a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA in 6 semester hours of approved college-level mathematics (no grade below "C-" is acceptable).

GRE

Official GRE results are required of all graduate applicants except those requesting admission to the College of Business, the College of Music, and specific MFA programs in the School of Theatre and the Department of Dance. GMAT

Official GMAT results are required of all graduate applicants to the College of Business. For more information on the GMAT, visit www.gmac.com/.

Certification of Financial Responsibility Form

Florida State University is required by U.S. federal regulations to verify the financial resources of each applicant prior to issuing the Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20 or DS-2019). Please complete the Certification of Financial Responsibility Form (CFR) found at admissions.fsu.edu/intl/apply.htm along with verification of support. Undergraduate applicants should submit the CFR and supporting documents to the International Center. Graduate applicants should submit the CFR and supporting documents to the academic department.

There are no grants, loans, or scholarships awarded to international undergraduate students. Graduate students may apply to their respective departments for assistantships or fellowships, although funds are extremely limited.
